After nearly 30 years of service, Tom Mick is retiring from his role as Village Manager of Park Forest. His career in local government spans 27 years, including 21 years as the village manager.
During a ceremony at a board meeting on Monday night, Mick was honored by Mayor Joseph A. Woods, village trustees, staff, and residents. Mayor Woods praised Mick's dedication to public service: “Tom leaves a legacy of excellence as a champion of public service,” he said.
Mick began his career with the Village of Park Forest in 1998 as assistant to the village manager and became the village manager in 2004 at age 34. He played a significant role in securing grant funding for the Village and overseeing Downtown redevelopment. Additionally, he served as staff liaison for the Veterans Commission and helped establish Rail Fan Park.
Reflecting on his tenure, Mick expressed gratitude: “I always tried to set the right example by being professional, ethical, and accountable,” he said. He emphasized knowing each employee personally was important for building credibility within the organization.
Trustees shared emotional tributes during the ceremony. Trustee Tiffani Graham described Mick’s departure as “the end of an era” while expressing her gratitude for his service. Trustee Theresa Settles commended Mick's involvement with family activities and acknowledged that he would be missed by the Veterans Commission.
Mick also thanked his family—his wife Tracy and children Megan, Tommy, and Aiden—for their support throughout his career: “Working in this field is often like being in a fishbowl,” he said.
The trustees praised Mick’s financial stewardship and commitment to civic engagement. Trustee Erin Slone highlighted that Mick “embodied what public service should be.” Trustee Maya Hardy noted the challenges involved in managing a diverse community.
Despite past disagreements with Mick, Trustee Randle White expressed respect for him: “His integrity and leadership are unmatched,” White said.
The Village adopted a formal resolution honoring Mick’s contributions during the evening’s recognition ceremony. Recently named recipient of the Gregory J. Bielawski Service to Profession Award by Illinois Association of Municipal Management recognizes his mentorship efforts.
Mick will officially retire on June 20, 2025. He plans to spend more time with family traveling or enjoying hobbies such as fishing or grilling while continuing support for Chicago Bears & White Sox teams.
“I have been proud to be part this community," said Mick "to live here raise my family; I am so very thankful.”
