Tim Ozinga State Rep. of GOP is voicing his displeasure with the newly-passed gun law that bans the sale, manufacture, delivery, and purchase of assault weapons in the state. on Jan 7th.
According to State Journal-Register, an amended version of a bill that was first introduced in the House back in December, Senate Bill 2226 also requires those that already own any of the weapons listed to register them with the Illinois State Police within 300 days of the bill's effective date.
SB 2226 would create a government-managed database of gun serial numbers monitored by the ISP; it would also ban many of the commonly used firearms in regard to home and personal protection and recreational uses like hunting.
Senate Bill 2226 collides with the second amendment right which is also being addressed by Rep. Tim Ozinga.
"This violates the second amendment and makes criminals out of law-abiding citizens," Rep. Tim Ozinga said. "SB 2226 would do nothing to address illegal gun use or public safety regarding gun violence. I voted NO for SB 2226."
Rep. Tim Ozinga argues that SB 2226 essentially creates a government-managed database of gun serial numbers monitored by the ISP while also banning many of the most commonly used firearms in regard to home and personal protection and recreational uses like hunting.
Another concern brought by gun rights advocates during the prior hearings was the limit on the number of rounds per magazine, with HB 5855 setting that number at 10, which opponents to the bill noted were less than other states such as Colorado, which has set a 15-round capacity.
