IV. OLD BUSINESS
1. Update on Hard to Count Census Areas Joliet/University Park
(Verenise Alvarez)
Ms. Alvarez stated I am here on behalf of the Spanish Community Center and I am the Get Out the Count Campaign Director. We are targeting all of the hard to count communities in Joliet, Crest Hill and University Park in Crete. We also have Sharon McGuire the Chair of the University Park Complete Count Committee; we are excited that we are extending our outreach efforts to that area. We will be canvasing in the neighborhoods. We will be wearing our We Count 2020 t-shirts; we will be wearing our blue shirts in Joliet and Crest Hill, and our yellow shirts in the Crete area. We wear these so that people know we are part of the We Count 2020 Campaign. We want to do this canvasing prior to Census Day which will be April 1st, 2020. Our purpose for canvasing is to remind the citizens to self-respond on line. Everyone will be receiving a post card that is being sent out March 12th ; this will be the first wave of information that they receive. One of our biggest partners will be the Public Libraries, University Park and Crest Hill. We start canvasing the last week in January and the full month of February into March. On March 12th every resident will receive a post card with a special code that code is unique to the address that the Census Bureau has in their records. The card also provides them with a link to their web-site to respond. If the Census Bureau doesn’t receive a response on-line they then send out the paper form for response.
2. Disc: December Complete Count Training
(Discussion)
Ms. Mueller stated one of the biggest questions I’ve been asked is when applying on line for census jobs, what is the process for follow up.
Ms. Voss replied they have an option to go back into the application system and check for status; this is avaibable to make sure that all of the information that was received is correct and it will provide updated information on their application. At this time the recruiters are gearing up for their hiring push; and making phone calls back to applicants.
Mr. Johnson asked if somebody does get a call back do they go to the Oswego Office or is there a remote office in the Joliet area.
Ms. Voss stated we have the office in Oswego and the Regional Office in downtown Chicago at 175 West Jackson St. We are working with community partners looking for some training sites that will be more centralized. We are going to start Group Quarters Communications next month. We will be sending out communications to their administration about the process to Nursing Homes, College Dorms, Hospitals and Correctional Centers. We are also looking for unsheltered locations where persons are experiencing homelessness maybe residing. We asking all of our community partners to share that information with us; this will be very helpful when sending out our teams. We understand that Tent City maybe a challenge; so we are working with the assistance of the City of Joliet as well as the Joliet Police Department in that area. We are taking great care with others that are in more sheltered situations; such as Domestic Violence Shelters. That information can be transmitted to us; understanding the serious and sensitive nature we will not be sending people in for a count. We just want to take care in making sure everyone gets counted.
3. Update on Kickoff Plans
(Discussion)
Ms. Mueller stated one of the things we are going to do is having our kickoffs in the communities rather than just in Joliet. Our first joint kickoff is in Romeoville; that is planned for January 22nd at 6:00 p.m. at 1050 Romeo Rd., Romeoville IL. We are looking forward to having the Mayor of Romeoville be our keynote speaker.
