As autumn begins and leaves start to fall in Park Forest, the Village’s Public Works Department is urging residents not to rake or blow leaves into the street. The reminder comes as homeowners begin their seasonal yard cleanups.

Nick Christie, assistant director of Public Works in Park Forest, highlighted the problems that arise when leaves are left in the street. “When leaves collect in the streets, they can block storm drains, leading to localized flooding during rain events,” Christie said. “It also makes it more challenging for our crews to keep the streets clean and safe for drivers and pedestrians.”

Leaves on roads can become slippery when wet, increasing risks for vehicles and bicyclists. Additionally, decaying leaves that enter storm sewers contribute to water pollution, as these drains flow directly into local waterways.

Christie advised residents to use the Village’s yard waste collection program. “We ask residents to use the Village’s yard waste collection program instead,” Christie said. “Place leaves and other yard waste in compostable paper bags for pick-up on your regular collection day. It’s a straightforward step that helps protect our community.”

Village officials also reminded residents that putting leaves into the street violates a local ordinance and could result in fines. “Doing the right thing with your leaves keeps our neighborhoods looking clean and prevents bigger problems down the line,” Christie added.

Park Forest encourages all residents to work together to keep streets clear during fall as preparations begin for winter.
