The City of Joliet is encouraging residents to take part in its Rain Barrel Program, which aims to help conserve water, reduce utility costs, and support environmental sustainability. Through this initiative, Joliet water customers can purchase up to three rain barrels per household at a subsidized rate of $35 each.
Councilwoman Suzanna Ibarra of District 5 has adopted the program at her own home and is advocating for others to do the same. “Using rain barrels is an easy way for families to cut down on water bills while helping the environment,” said Ibarra, who uses two rain barrels herself. “I use the collected water to keep my plants and greenery healthy all summer long. It’s sustainable, simple, and really effective.”
She expressed hope that her example would encourage more residents to participate. “Our Public Utilities Department does a great job promoting water conservation,” she added. “I’m leading by example to show my constituents that this is easy, affordable, and can save money, especially during these hot summer months.”
According to city data, one rain barrel can save around 1,300 gallons of water during peak summer months by providing an alternative source for outdoor tasks such as watering lawns and gardens. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that outdoor use accounts for nearly 30% of household water consumption in the United States.
The city reports that 732 rain barrels have already been subsidized through the program so far. Each year, 150 subsidies are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Residents interested in participating can find more information or place orders online at www.joliet.gov/government/departments/public-utilities/customer-programs/rain-barrel-program.
“Not only are rain barrels beneficial to residents, but they are also helping the City achieve its goals for water conservation.” Allison Swisher, Director of Public Utilities said.
Joliet’s Rain Barrel Program forms part of a broader effort by the city to promote water conservation as it transitions toward using Lake Michigan as its new primary water source by 2030.
Joliet is located in Will and Kendall counties about 30 miles southwest of Chicago. According to the most recent census data from 2020, it is Illinois’ third largest city with a population of over 150,000 people (https://www.joliet.gov).
