Residents of Park Forest are facing increased electricity costs following a rate hike by ComEd, the primary electricity provider in the region. The increase, which took effect on June 1, affects the "capacity charge" portion of monthly bills. According to ComEd's website, this charge may appear as a separate line item for customers on hourly pricing plans or be included in the electricity supply charge for those with fixed-rate plans.

A spokesperson from ComEd informed WGN-TV that the increase is passed directly from the supplier to customers without any additional markup. On average, residential customers can expect their monthly bills to rise by approximately $10.60.

Carrie Malfeo, sustainability coordinator for the Village of Park Forest, noted that this change could pose a financial burden for some households. "This increase will have an impact for some residents," Malfeo said. "However, now is the best time to make your home energy efficient and take advantage of the many programs and support opportunities."

Malfeo urged residents to participate in ComEd’s free energy efficiency assessment program, which provides complimentary and discounted products aimed at reducing energy consumption. She also highlighted assistance programs such as LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program), Payment Plans, Fresh Start Services, and the Catch Up and Save program.

To estimate their new capacity charge, Malfeo suggested that customers multiply their individual "capacity obligation" by the "capacity charge rate." This obligation reflects expected usage during peak demand times—typically hot summer afternoons—and varies per customer.

ComEd stated that the capacity charge rate is determined by market conditions and recalculated annually. Customers will see these new charges reflected on their bills starting in July.

The utility explained that capacity charges are essential to ensure sufficient electricity availability during peak demand periods. The rate is updated each June based on a combination of past summer energy usage and market-set prices.

For more information, customers are encouraged to visit ComEd's website.
