The Park Forest Police Department is enhancing its community engagement efforts through various events and fundraisers. This Friday, officers will participate in the annual "Cop on a Rooftop" event at Dunkin' Donuts in Chicago Heights. Chief Brian Rzyski emphasized the department's dedication to community involvement.

"Our officers strive to participate in everything," Rzyski said. "Over the years, we've participated in events like the annual Polar Plunge, Torch Run, and 'Cop on the Rooftop' to raise money for Special Olympics Illinois."

For nearly 30 years, these events have supported thousands of athletes through Special Olympics Illinois by providing sports competitions and training opportunities. Rzyski mentioned that law enforcement agencies statewide raise millions for this cause annually.

The Park Forest Police Department is launching its second fundraising campaign this year. Last year, they raised $3,000 for the Cop on the Rooftop event and collected about $6,000 for the Polar Plunge. Additional donations throughout the year brought their total fundraising efforts to over $10,000.

Rzyski highlighted the importance of connecting with the community in Park Forest. "Just last week or so, we hosted a youth violence prevention giveaway at Somonauk Park," Rzyski said. The department plans to participate in upcoming events like Residents Appreciation Day and Unity Day.

Additionally, they have established a Problem-Oriented Policing (POP) program to engage with residents by assigning specific officers to neighborhoods to address quality-of-life issues.

"Ultimately, our goal is to ensure our officers develop relationships with not only our residents but all community members," Rzyski stated.

Rzyski invited those interested in meeting Park Forest Police officers and supporting a good cause to join them at Dunkin' Donuts this Friday from 5 a.m. to noon. Donors will receive coupons for free donuts and coffee depending on their contribution level.
