As warmer weather approaches, the Village of Park Forest is reminding residents about the requirements for lawn maintenance. The regulations specify that grass, weeds, and uncultivated plants should not exceed a height of eight inches. Decorative plants, trees, and ornamental shrubs are exempt from this rule.

Eshe McGee, the Village's code enforcement manager, stressed the importance of well-maintained lawns for community health and appearance. "During May and June, we often see an increase in complaints about tall grass," McGee said. Residents should begin planning their lawn care efforts throughout the spring and summer months.

The Village's enforcement process starts with a warning for first-time violators, giving them an opportunity to adhere to the rules. Continued non-compliance may result in fines of up to $750. McGee clarified that the intention is not to generate revenue but to maintain neighborhood standards. "Park Forest residents should keep their grass cut to maintain a neat and healthy lawn, prevent the spread of weeds and pests, and uphold property values," McGee said.

Additionally, with the onset of warmer weather, the department is hiring a code inspector dedicated to enforcing the grass height ordinance. The role is crucial as it helps ensure that the community remains organized and safe.

For vacant properties, McGee advises residents to report them to the Building Department instead of managing the lawns themselves. "Typically, you'll have that good neighbor who doesn't mind cutting a vacant property's grass," McGee noted. But this can sometimes lead to partial maintenance and confusion over responsibility. It's better to let the Village handle these cases by calling 708-503-7703.
