Will County Sheriff’s Deputy and candidate for sheriff Jim Reilly is hosted a Law Enforcement Appreciation Fundraiser on July 31 in Channahon.

Held at the River Hawk Brewery, the three-hour long event kicked off at 2 p.m. with tickets at $20, including a food truck and two drinks. First responders were admitted free of charge. The event was also hailed as “a fundraiser to support sheriff candidates that will stand up for the men and women that keep our communities safe.”

Grundy County Sheriff Ken Briley and several Will County board members are also scheduled to be on hand to speak out against House Bill 3653, a measure that seeks to end cash bail, require body cameras for all officers, establish use-of-force standards statewide and institute additional powers for state officials when it comes to who can be a member of law enforcement.

“We are already seeing the dramatic increase in crime around the state,” Reilly added. “To my law enforcement brothers and sisters, come out and share your concerns and help us support you.”

Reilly has served more than 15 years as a law enforcement officer, including being named Police Officer of the Year in 2016, 1993 and 1991. Now pursuing his Ph.D. in criminal justice, Reilly said he feels his skills are experiences are now critically needed, and his first orders of business as sheriff would be to improve community relationships and tackle the heroin and opioid epidemic now plaguing the Will County area.

Reilly also previously served on the Joliet Police Department, including years of working in the drug enforcement unit.
