State Representative Nicole La Ha has announced her support for House Bill 576, which aims to protect elected officials and candidates from political violence by allowing them to shield their personal information. The bill was voted on during the fourth day of the Illinois House’s Veto Session in Springfield.

House Bill 576 incorporates legislative ideas previously sponsored by La Ha in House Bill 1468, though it is limited to elected officials and candidates rather than extending protections to first responders. “While the bill I sponsored this Summer would have extended this same protection to first responders, I will accept this as a step in the right direction,” said La Ha, who noted that her family was threatened during an incident of political violence earlier this year.

The issue of protecting personal information for public servants has gained renewed attention following incidents of political violence across the country over the summer. HB 576 sets out procedures for privacy requests and establishes penalties for violations, aiming to help officials perform their duties without fear. “This is a basic line of protection,” Rep. La Ha said. “No one should have to trade their personal safety to serve their community.”

La Ha, a Republican, was elected in 2023 to represent Illinois’ 82nd House District, succeeding John Egofske.

Rep. Nicole La Ha serves constituents in the 82nd District.
