City of Joliet Tree Advisory Board met Feb. 4.

1. ROLL CALL:
PRESENT: Rita Renwick, Karen Fonte, Willamena Jaeger, Cynthia Wright
ABSENT: Billie Limacher, Mary Schoenheider, Ralph Schultz
ALSO PRESENT: Jim Teiber – Arborist City of Joliet
2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Motion to approve the November 5, 2019 Tree Advisory Board minutes was made by Karen Fonte.
Motion seconded by Cynthia Wright.
Motion carried by the following vote:
AYES: Rita Renwick, Karen Fonte, Willamena Jaeger, Cynthia Wright
NAYS: None.
3. CITIZENS TO BE HEARD ON AGENDA ITEMS:
None
4. ARBORIST REPORT:
Jim Teiber stated that fall 2019 contract planting of 1,000 trees was completed despite unfavorable planting conditions and 100 of the 2020 trees were also in the ground. 80 new flower pots will be planted with a red, white and blue theme in addition to downtown area boxes. He will have two interns and be responsible for watering. The board discussed the need for a trained dedicated crew to assist in tree management under Jim’s direction.
5. ELECTION OF OFFICERS:
Motion to elect Rita Renwick as Tree Advisory Board Chairman was made by Cynthia Wright.
Karen Fonte seconded the motion.
Motion carried by the following vote:
AYES: Rita Renwick, Karen Fonte, Willamena Jaeger, Cynthia Wright NAYS: None
Motion to elect Karen Fonte as Tree Advisory Board Vice-Chairman was made by Rita Renwick.
Motion seconded by Cynthia Wright.

6. NEW or OLD BUSINESS not for final action or recommendation
TREE PRESERVATION ORDINANCE PROGRESS
Rita stated that she will check with Ralph Schultz to see that changes recommended by Emily Okallau, community Outreach Coordinator with the Morton Arboretum, have been added to the Tree Preservation Ordinance and then speak with the planning department to proceed.
PUBLIC EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH
A Native Plant Seminar will be held Tuesday, April 21, 2020 at the West Branch of the Joliet Public Library co-sponsored by the City of Joliet, Joliet Public Library, Will County Audubon Society, Will Co. Forest Preserve District, and the Nature Foundation.
UPDATE ON GRANTS/AMERICA IN BLOOM
Teiber reported that the U.S. Forest Service Grant requirements were completed by the end of 2019. The CN Grant and America in Bloom judging will take place this year.
ARBOR DAY PLANS
Woodland School will host the 2020 Arbor Day Celebration. Poster contest and judging will take place on March 24th and winners will be recognized at city council on April 7. Jim is working with homeowner’s associations to hold events. Those interested are: Brookside, Kendall Ridge, and New Fairfield.
BOARD MEMBER STATUS
Betsy Satcher, co-president of the Eastside Neighborhood Council is interested in joining the board.
