Summit Hill School District 161 students suspended 72 times in a single school year

Summit Hill School District 161 reported 72 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 72 students during the year. That equates to 2.3 percent of the 3,083 students enrolled.

Of the 58 in-school suspensions, 48 were given to boys and 10 were given to girls, all of whom were elementary or middle schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 43 incidents. There were 14 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 45 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 14 out-of-school suspensions, all were given to boys, all of whom were elementary or middle schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for violence without physical injury. The category includes seven incidents. There were four incidents of unspecified reasons. For seven incidents, students were suspended for 1-3 days.
