Steger School District 194 students suspended 462 times in a single school year

Steger School District 194 reported 462 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 462 students during the year. That equates to 31.6 percent of the 1,464 students enrolled.

Of the 388 in-school suspensions, 286 were given to boys and 102 were given to girls, all of whom were elementary or middle schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 388 incidents. For 319 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 74 out-of-school suspensions, 51 were given to boys and 23 were given to girls, all of whom were elementary or middle schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 66 incidents. There were four incidents of drugs. For 30 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
