Analysis: Sales tax funded 8 percent of City of Washington budget in 2016

The City of Washington's local sales tax brought in $2,034,939 in 2016, according to Illinois State Comptroller revenue data. Washington, population 15,816, relied on its local sales tax to contribute 8 percent of total revenue that year.

Washington levies a 1.25 percent sales tax. The average of five suburbs in Tazewell County is 0.95. The high is 1.25 percent; the low is 0 percent.

Will County Gazette analyzed the sales tax collections in five Tazewell County suburbs and found they generated a total of $13,878,944 in tax revenue in 2016. That was the equivalent of 9% spent by local government.
