Municipal leaders in Will County have recently engaged with ComEd to advance plans for modernizing an 18-mile transmission line stretching from Frankfort, Illinois, to Demotte, Indiana. This project affects transmission facilities in Frankfort, University Park, Monee, and Crete. The initial phase of the project commenced with soil studies in June.
The undertaking involves dismantling and removing 110 existing steel lattice transmission towers. These aging structures will be replaced by contemporary monopole steel structures, accompanied by upgraded electrical wires.
The scope of the project includes reconstructing 17.7 miles of transmission lines. ComEd plans to replace current lattice towers with modern monopoles and enhance all wiring systems. The new monopole structures are designed with a smaller base diameter than the existing square lattice structures, which minimizes their ground impact.
This infrastructure upgrade aims to facilitate new service while adhering to transmission system performance standards. It is expected to enhance the reliability of the transmission system, strengthen and improve overall network efficiency, and increase resilience against severe weather conditions.
The estimated timeline for this project is subject to change:
- March 2025 to June 2025: Preliminary work and soil studies
- July 2025 to December 2025: Foundation setting and matting
- August 2025 to January 2027: Electrical construction
In Monee specifically, the scope includes installing 46 new foundations, removing existing lattice structures, and installing monopoles.
