Park Forest officials are urging residents to get vaccinated against flu, COVID-19, and shingles ahead of the holiday season as cases of respiratory illnesses increase in the Chicago area. The Village’s Recreation, Parks, and Community Health Department has teamed up with Osco Drug to offer a Community Vaccination Clinic on Wednesday, Oct. 22, from 10 a.m. to noon at Village Hall. The clinic will accept both HMO and PPO insurance.
“This is our moment to act before the holidays, when gatherings and travel increase,” said Recreation Manager Adina McCollough. “Getting vaccinated now helps protect not only yourself, but also grandparents, children, and neighbors who may be more vulnerable.”
McCollough emphasized that the timing of the clinic is significant due to rising rates of respiratory illnesses in Illinois. “Flu activity is already higher than it was at this time last year, and local hospitals are experiencing an increase in cases,” McCollough stated. “COVID-19 test positivity in Chicago recently climbed to more than 5 percent, the highest level since January. That’s why clinics like this one are so important in helping to slow the spread.”
She added that vaccination benefits even healthy adults by lowering their risk for severe illness and protecting people who are immunocompromised or unable to receive certain vaccines. By midday during the clinic, dozens of residents had already received vaccinations.
McCollough encouraged more community members to participate in upcoming clinics. “This is more than just a clinic—it’s a community safeguard,” she said. “If we step up now, we give ourselves the best chance to enjoy the holidays safely and keep our community healthy.”
