A resident-led initiative is starting in Park Forest to help maintain the village’s mid-block crosswalks, also known as sidewalk cut-throughs or “catwalks.” These walkways connect neighborhoods with schools, parks, and other community spaces.
Michele Johnson, who lives in Park Forest, has launched the “Cut Thru Crew” to encourage neighbors to care for these public walkways. Over the years, many nearby homeowners have taken it upon themselves to keep the paths clear. Some of these areas remain tidy due to their efforts, while others have become overgrown.
Public Works Director Roderick Ysaguirre voiced support for the effort. “Anytime a resident steps forward with an idea to make Park Forest a better place, it’s something to be celebrated,” Ysaguirre stated. “These walkways are a unique part of our community design, and when neighbors work together to keep them safe and inviting, it benefits everyone.”
The first meeting of the Cut Thru Crew will take place on Thursday, Aug. 21 at 5:30 p.m. in the conference room at the Park Forest Library at 400 Lakewood Blvd. Organizers say anyone interested can join in helping maintain these walkways, whether or not they live next to one.
“This is truly a grassroots, volunteer-led effort,” Johnson said. “We want to recognize those who have been quietly maintaining these spaces for years while encouraging others to take part and take pride in them.”
