Fireworks remain illegal in Illinois, with potential fines reaching up to $750 for violations. Authorities emphasize their role in enforcing these regulations, particularly during the busy Fourth of July weekend.
The guidelines specify that fireworks capable of exploding, shooting into the sky, or purchased out-of-state are likely illegal. Conversely, items such as smoke devices, sparklers, fountains, and ground snakes available at local retailers like Menards or Walmart are generally permissible.
Possession of illegal fireworks could result in a ticket or arrest under state law and local ordinances. Concerns about fireworks include disturbances to pets and individuals with sensory issues, potential fire hazards, and risks of physical injury.
The police department acknowledges receiving numerous complaints related to fireworks during this period. They prioritize addressing significant violations while managing other calls.
Residents hosting gatherings involving fireworks may not receive immediate police contact but could be issued court notices later. In such cases, authorities will seek the maximum penalty per violation.
"FIREWORKS ARE ILLEGAL in the State of Illinois – Up to $750.00 fine," states the release. "We don’t make the rules, but we are charged with enforcing them."
"Just a reminder that if it blows up/explodes, shoots into the sky, or you can only get it out of state, it is probably illegal," continues the statement.
"The police department gets ALOT of calls and complaints (like every other town) about fireworks this time of year," notes the release.
"If you host a party or have fireworks at your house...we WILL be looking for the maximum fee of $750.00 PER OCCURRENCE," warns officials.
