Will County collects just under $1.6 million in County Motor Fuel Tax in April

Will County taxpayers paid just under $1.6 million in County Motor Fuel Tax in April, according to Illinois tax records.

This figure marks a significant increase over the previous month, when County Motor Fuel Tax collection stood at approximately $1.4 million.

Over the past 12 months, Will County's residents have collectively paid a total of $18.6 million in County Motor Fuel Tax.

The County Motor Fuel Tax is a local sales tax levied on motor fuels, with revenue dedicated to transportation infrastructure projects such as road construction, maintenance, and repair. It aims to enhance road conditions, improve safety, and facilitate efficient transportation.

A 2025 WalletHub study found that Illinois has the highest overall taxes in the U.S., with rates more than 50% higher than the national average. The study estimates that a median household in Illinois pays an effective tax rate of 16.58%, or about $13,099 per year.
