Illinois Senate Republican Leader John Curran has voiced strong opposition to the latest proposal from Democrats, which seeks to introduce a $6 billion increase in taxes. Curran, representing Downers Grove, made a public statement critiquing the proposal, particularly its impact on taxpayers.
According to Curran, the introduction of this tax increase comes on the heels of Governor Pritzker's budget proposal in February. This earlier proposal already aimed to raise state spending by $15 billion since the governor took office. Curran highlighted the scale of the budget, noting it would amount to a 37 percent increase in state expenditure.
Curran expressed concern that the Democrats' new proposal would further burden Illinois taxpayers, who he claims already face the highest taxes nationally and deal with substantial unemployment rates. The additional funds, according to the proposal, would be directed towards welfare programs for non-citizens, something Curran contests amidst the current fiscal climate.
“Instead of squeezing more and more out of our families and businesses, legislators should be standing up for Illinois taxpayers so they can use their hard-earned money to build a better life and a better state,” Curran stated.
Curran called on legislative colleagues across party lines to join him in opposing the tax increase. His plea emphasizes protecting the financial interests of Illinois residents.
“I urge all my legislative colleagues – regardless of party – to join me in opposing these egregious tax increases and protect Illinois taxpayers,” said Curran.
