City of Joliet Historic Preservation Commission met April 29.

Here are the minutes provided by the commission:

CALL TO ORDER

DECLARATION OF QUORUM

Present

Quinn Adamowski, Candace Johnson, Kailee Lowry, Sharon Merwin, Sara Stovall and Steven Wright

Absent

Brian Bessler, Mary Beth Gannon and Kevin Heinemann

APPROVAL OF THE JOLIET HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION 2023 ANNUAL REPORT

The Historic Preservation Commission met at their regular meeting on April 24, 2024 to discuss the Joliet Historic Preservation Commission's 2023 Annual Report. Ms. Bernhard went over the suggested changes that were made to report.

A motion was made by Sara Stovall, seconded by Kailee Lowry, to approve APPROVAL OF THE JOLIET HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION 2023 ANNUAL REPORT. The motion carried by the following vote:

Aye: Adamowski, Johnson, Lowry, Merwin, Stovall and Wright

SELECTION OF 2024 ANNUAL HISTORIC PRESERVATION AWARD RECIPIENTS

Ms. Bernhard went over the proposed nominations for the 2024 Annual Historic Preservation Awards:

∙ St. Peter Lutheran Church (310 N. Broadway - for their interior and exterior preservation work, which included a new roof and interior restoration to the sanctuary. ∙ Joliet Railroad Museum at Union Depot Tower - for effort and dedication by numerous partners including the City of Joliet, Illinois Department of Transportation, Joliet Area Historical Museum, Metra, Union Pacific, and BNSF Railway that led to the adaptive reuse of the former interlocking signal tower into a museum and the preservation of its mechanical and operating equipment.

∙ Joliet Area Historical Museum for its dedication to preserving Route 66 History by saving the Gemini Giant statue in Wilmington. Note: staff does not support this nomination since the statue is located outside of the City limits. In addition, staff did not receive a nomination application for this nomination.

Ms. Bernhard asked if there were any questions. Ms. Merwin asked if the nomination for St. Peter Lutheran Church needs any additional attachments or information, Ms. Bernhard said no, the attachments presented are more for the JHPC viewing. Ms. Bernhard, Ms. Merwin & Chairwoman Johnson discussed the improvements that were made to the church. Ms. Merwin asked how much attention these awards will get in the media, Ms. Bernhard said typically after the approval she does a press release that will get posted on the City of Joliet Facebook page. Chairwoman Johnson asked if the nominations will be on the City of Joliet website, Ms. Bernhard said the awardees are listed on the city’s website but not the nomination itself.

A motion was made by Sharon Merwin, seconded by Sara Stovall, to approve the 2024 Annual Historic Preservation Award for St. Peter Lutheran Church. The motion carried by the following vote:

Aye: Adamowski, Johnson, Lowry, Merwin, Stovall and Wright

SELECTION OF 2024 ANNUAL HISTORIC PRESERVATION AWARD RECIPIENTS

A motion was made by Sharon Merwin, seconded by Sara Stovall, to approve the 2024 Annual Historic Preservation Award for the Joliet Railroad Museum at Union Depot Tower. The motion carried by the following vote:

Aye: Adamowski, Johnson, Merwin and Stovall

Absent: Bessler, Gannon and Heinemann

Abstain: Lowry and Wright
