The Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) has reported an increase in the state's unemployment rate. According to preliminary data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the unemployment rate rose by 0.2 percentage points to 4.6 percent, while nonfarm payrolls decreased by 15,000 in October. This data reveals a decline in job opportunities across various sectors.

In October, the Professional and Business Services sector experienced the largest monthly payroll job decline of 6,700, followed by Manufacturing (-5,300), Financial Activities (-2,900), and Educational and Health Services (-2,900). However, there were some sectors that saw job gains, including Government (+4,200), Leisure and Hospitality (+1,500), and Construction (+700).

"This is another indicator of Illinois' poor economic health and is a result of the continued priority to raise taxes and regulate businesses," says State Representative Tim Ozinga. "We need to pass some serious economic reforms in Springfield next year if we want to see our economy grow."

In addition to the concerning unemployment rate, December brings with it National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month. This month is dedicated to raising awareness about the dangers of driving under the influence during the holiday season, which has the highest rate of accidents throughout the year. Representative Ozinga emphasizes the importance of responsible behavior, stating, "Over 40,000 people died from alcohol-related accidents last year. Don't let yourself or your family become a statistic this year. Never drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol."

Amidst these challenges, Representative Ozinga also takes the opportunity to highlight local businesses. He invites community members to submit nominations for local business highlights, recognizing the importance of supporting and promoting small businesses within the community.

As the holiday season approaches, Representative Ozinga extends his warm wishes to all who celebrate. He encourages constituents to stay up to date with his work by visiting his website, where they can find information about upcoming legislation, contact his office, and more.

In conclusion, the rise in Illinois' unemployment rate is a concerning sign of the state's economic health. Representative Ozinga acknowledges the need for serious economic reforms and urges action in Springfield. As National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month begins, he emphasizes responsible behavior on the roads during the holiday season. Additionally, he highlights the importance of supporting local businesses and encourages community engagement.
