Village of New Lenox Safe Communities America, Substance Use Prevention Task Group met July 10.

Here are the minutes provided by the group:

CALL TO ORDER

This meeting was held via Zoom videoconference. Dan Martin called the meeting to order at 1:33pm.

IN ATTENDANCE

The Substance Use Prevention Task Group Members in attendance were Dan Martin / Village of New Lenox, Jen Hahs / Rosecrance Health Network, Marie Kress / Kennedy Center, Sheree Stilwell / Faith based and family support groups, Dominica Dybas / Greater Chicago Area DEA, Ausra Tauginaite / Joliet Junior College, Gloria Bloodsaw / Gateway, Jen Vujosevic / Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210, Jessica Contreras / Student Wellness Advocate JJC, Colleen Kestel / Systemic Wellness, Amy Maher / New Lenox Park District, Paul Hempel / Recovery Centers of America, Brooke Garren / Uniquely You Behavioral Health, Joan Stefka / Will County Health Department, Ariel Ruttenberg / New Lenox Police Department, and Vickie Dance / Illinois Poison Center.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

The Minutes from the May 8, 2023 Task Group Meeting which had been disseminated via email to Task Group members were discussed. Marie Kress made a motion to approve the minutes, and it was seconded by Gloria Bloodsaw. After no further discussion, the motion carried, and the minutes were approved.

OLD BUSINESS

HERO “Hidden in Plain Sight” Trailer Update

Dan reported that the trailer continues to have a full schedule and the “Dine and Donate” fundraising event on June 15, 2023 from 11:00am to 9:00pm at the Chicago Dough New Lenox location was a success.

2023 Your Light Still Shines

Dan announced the confirmed date of YLSS will be Wednesday, August 23, 2023 at Parkview Christian Church in New Lenox (in support of International Overdose Awareness Day, which is Thursday, August 31, 2023). The Planning Committee has secured all plans and the agenda. The event will include the HERO “Hidden in Plain Sight” trailer, Unwanted Medication Disposal, Informational Tables, Memorial Tables and Narcan Training. This year’s event will feature a short film on Substance Use Disorder with a formal discussion by a panel immediately following the showing. The event schedule is as follows:

5:00pm to 6:30pm – HERO’s “Hidden in Plain Sight” trailer

5:00pm to 6:30pm – Unwanted Medication Takeback (NLPD)

5:00pm to 6:30pm – Informational Tables (approximately 30 organizations) and Memorial Tables

6:00pm to 6:30pm – Narcan Training

6:30pm to 7:30pm – Showing of Addiction Resource Council Film and Panel Discussion

Jim Scarpace / Ascension Illinois Hospital System

Mary Ellen Miller / HERO – lived experience (son died of drug OD)

Jason Moss / HERO – lived experience (addiction and recovery)

Dan reminded the group that this is the Substance Use Prevention Task Group’s signature annual event and to please assist with marketing between now and August 23rd. We need flyers and posters to go out to the community as well as marketing through everyone’s circles of influence. The press release has already gone out and there will be continued releases leading up to the event.

NEXT MEETING DATE

The next meeting of the Substance Use Prevention Task Group will be Monday, September 11, 2023 / 1:30pm via Zoom videoconference.

The next New Lenox Safe Communities Coalition Meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 26, 2023 at 10:30am via Zoom videoconference.
