Illinois Rep. Jackie Haas (R-Kankakee) is marking Human Trafficking Month by imploring people to watch for potential signs to cut down on human trafficking.
"January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month and a reminder that we can all do our part to recognize and report human trafficking. KNOW THE SIGNS," Haas wrote Jan. 16 in a Facebook post.
Haas listed some of the signs that a child could be a victim of human trafficking, such as an adult controlling them by speaking for them, the child looking disheveled or the child showing signs of physical abuse as well as not possessing any identification.
According to the U.S. State Department website, An estimated 27.6 million people are currently victims of trafficking worldwide, with many of them being hidden in plain sight. To that end, the State Department engages in project to combat the crime, but public engagement is also needed.
"To properly tackle this crime, it will take a commitment from each of us to end human trafficking," the department said on its website.
The State Department said it funds the projects to find "new and creative ways" to prevent or stop trafficking, such as making partnerships with civil organizations and the private sector, and through implementation of the National Action Plan to Combat Human Trafficking, the website added.
