During its Nov 9 meeting, the Monee Village Board of Trustees heard a request from Janet Blue asking that her West Margret Street property be deemed a historic location.
“It's really a nice thing for our village, kind of a bragging rights for our village to be able to have these,” Trustee Scott Yourdris said during the meeting, which was streamed on YouTube. "The more the better."
The board also learned that once the property, at 5359 W. Margret St., is deemed a landmark, there is no additional responsibility for the village and the owner is responsible for upkeep.
It was noted that the building was originally built in 1857 and remodeled extensively in 1925, and its interior and exterior are important architecturally.
The board noted that the owner receives a plaque, and the Historical Society is looking at other homes for designation. Owners are restricted in making changes to the property to keep it original.
The board agreed that the property is worthy of the recognition and approved the request by a unanimous vote. The measure now goes before the Will County Historic Commission for its consideration.
