The Monee Village Board of Trustees helped the Monee Mavericks commemorate their Super Bowl victory during its Nov. 9 board meeting.
The Mavericks, a youth football and cheer organization, won their Super Bowl against the Steger Storm, and Mayor Theresa Bogs during the board meeting streamed on YouTube that the team won with its commitment, integrity and dedication.
“They finished their season undefeated, despite having a smaller roster than most of the teams they faced,” Bogs said.
Coaches and players were in attendance to mark their league championship and displayed their trophy. The non-profit group is based in Monee and its participants range in age from 5 to 14.
Coaches Rico Guillermo, Tim Dunn and Jamie Harris, trophy in hand, discussed some of the challenges that the team faced in a season that didn’t hold much promise when they kicked off with only 10 players.
The team was able to expand its roster with the addition of a few more players and they were able to stay healthy during the season. Players and coaches posed for a photo with members of council and showed off their trophy.
Guillermo told council that some of the players had never played organized football before this season, and even as competition got more difficult, the Mavericks continued to win. In the title game, the Mavericks rallied after trailing at the half.
