Joliet Pridefest is being slammed by Libs of Tik Tok for purportedly asking children to tip cross-dressers performing at the event.
The event is planned for noon to 5 p.m. at Sept. 17 at Bicentennial Park which features an “all ages drag show” from 5-6:30 p.m. followed by a performance by gay country artist Steve Grand.
“Joliet, IL is having a pride fest sponsored by elected officials. They encourage kids to ‘bring your dollar bills’ so they can hand tips to the drag queens during the all-ages drag show,” Libs of TikTok posted on Twitter.
The program is one of many in the state that features a drag performance aimed at kids, something that many critics say should never take place.
Drag shows, according to some critics, are intrinsically inappropriate for children.
“Kid-friendly drag show is right up there with kid-friendly strip club, kid-friendly porn and kid-friendly cigarette — it’s self-evident that all of this is harmful to children unless you’ve been brainwashed to believe that kids should be sexualized,” Terry Schilling, president of the American Principles Project, told McHenry Times.
Following complaints from locals at a recent council meeting about the drag performance being targeted at children, a recent Drag Queen Bingo show that was scheduled to include a drag performance was canceled.
A drag queen who is best known for hosting late-night shows with an adult theme was to host and perform at a game of drag queen bingo.
