City of Joliet Arts Commission met June 15

City of Joliet Arts Commission met June 15.

Here are the minutes provided by the commission:

1. ROLL CALL

Present: Quinn Adamowski, Eryn Blaser, Lori Carmine, Erick Deshaun Dorris, Lauren Las, Megan Millen, Sue Regis, John Simpson Jr, Peg (Marguerite) Stoiber, Deborah Summers and David Wheeler

Absent: Eric Gorder, Crystal Malone, Brett Marcum, Lonnie Posley and Giovanni Alvarado

2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES

A motion was made by Simpson, Jr, seconded by Regis, that the May 18, 2022 meeting minutes be approved. The motion carried unanimously.

3. CITIZENS TO BE HEARD ON AGENDA ITEMS

None.

It is not a question and answer period and staff, and the Commission members do not generally respond to public comments. The City Clerk has a copy of the public speaking procedures; please note, speakers who engage in conduct injurious to the harmony of the meeting shall be called to order by the Presiding Officer and may forfeit the opportunity to speak.

4. NEW BUSINESS

None.

5. NEW OR OLD BUSINESS, NOT FOR FINAL ACTION OR RECOMMENDATION

A. For Discussion: Summer of Steel and Stone Event

Funding was approved for the sculpture event at the June meeting. Blaser announces July 28 opening event date, 5-6pm at Strange and Unusual Gallery, 630-930 reception at Juliet's. Art will travel around Joliet for a few months before raffle is complete. Advertising begins end of June.

B. For Discussion: Arts Alliance Illinois Coalition and Illinois Creative Future Fund Campaign

Erick Dorris recaps Arts Alliance Illinois success in soliciting ARPA funds from state. Was able to secure $50 million for arts organizations, issued through DCEO. Allocation for funds is focused on rural, outside of Chicago, organizations.

C. Committee Reports

i. Funding Committee

a. Art Walk

Blaser and Dorris jointly explain the Art Walk concept, sponsorships and budget proposal. The Commission also discusses the date of the event and other conflicts.

b. Grant

IACA Grant for 2023 has been submitted. National Endowment grant is being worked on for July submission. This grant would likely go to production of Bicentennial Park

ii. Arts Incubation Committee

a. Sculptures

The subcommittee developed a plan to assess location, surrounding areas, accessibility etc. of each sculpture. Anticipates the process being shorter than the murals.

b. Public Art Policy

The subcommittee plans to review other community policies and pieces that should be included. Anticipated it to take many months to complete the policy.

iii. Arts Innovation Committee

No report.

iv. Partnerships & Community Engagement Committee

No report, requires reappointment.

A motion was made by Millen, seconded by Regis, that the June 15, 2022 meeting be adjourned. The motion carried unanimously.
