The Will County School District Board of Education hosted a meeting where its director of technology urged the school to be technologically ready for students returning from summer break.
“So, it’s one little thing we’ve been playing with this year and moving along slowly, but we'll have ramped up hopefully by the time everyone's back from summer break this year and have everything ready for a new device when they come in,” Bill Witkowsky, director of technology for the school, said during the May meeting.
The Institute of Education Sciences did a study on teachers using technology learning tools in the classroom and found that 33% of participating schools agreed that students gained independence in learning before the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Will county school district will be implementing MFA — or two-factor identification — on all of their district email addresses. The tech department will start rolling out the process, which involves syncing your phone to authenticate your email, beginning with teachers’ emails and moving on to staff email addresses. This will decrease the risk to the network and improve security according to their security insurance.
Chalkbeat reported that the “Back to school” holiday sales tax in Illinois can be used to help students afford technology such as calculators.
A survey of the paraprofessionals in the school district asked about what they would prefer and how they use their district-distributed devices to better aid and supply them. Most of them preferred a laptop-style device, although a large percentage said they prefer a hybrid device that can convert between laptop and tablet style.
The board will meet again at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Ludwig School Media Center on 710 North State Street in Lockport, Ill.
The district plans to take some old computers from the teachers and give them to the paraprofessionals for the 22-23 school year as it will still be an upgrade for them, but would also give the district more time to research and budget to provide the staff with the best possible technology for their circumstances.
