State Senator Michael E. Hastings (D-Frankfort)'s bill to prosecute fraudulent service providers who exploit veterans and to expand access to free care for veterans, has passed in the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, according to a press release.
According to Hastings, the legislation would guarantee that veterans are not exploited and receive quality government services.
"The past year has demonstrated just how easy it can be for those with malicious intent to take advantage of the innocent," Sen. Michael Hastings wrote in a Facebook post. "It is our obligation to protect our veterans from these bad actors,"
The legislation, titled House Bill 3865 (HB 3865), requires that any advertisement for veteran and military service benefits mention that these benefits are available for free at federal, state, and county veteran service offices. It has been referred to the full Senate for consideration for further review.
If passed, failure to disclose the existence of veteran service programs in advertisements for those services would be illegal.
