Jim Oberweis is seeking a recount in the 14th Congressional District after an unofficial vote tally found incumbent U.S. Rep. Lauren Underwood leading him by only 5,377 votes.
Oberweis had 197,818 votes to Underwood’s 203,195 at last count.
“This is not a situation where (Oberweis) is trying to be difficult. We made a calculated decision we want to see this thing through, want to make sure the vote total is accurate, that there weren’t any illegal votes cast,” Oberweis spokesman Travis Akin told the Chicago Sun-Times.
Oberweis initially declared victory on election night.
Akin said Oberweis would concede if the recount showed that Underwood's victory was indeed still intact.
