Cost of college went up for all students at Governors State University

In-state tuition and fees rose 3.8 percent for 2018-19 at Governors State University, according to recent data from the U.S. Department of Education.

Illinois residents paid $12,196 to attend the four-year public institution this year – $450 more than the $11,746 charged for 2017-18.

Non-residents paid 77 percent more than residents this year, or $21,586. Their price tag grew 2.1 percent from $21,136 in 2017-18.

About 99 percent of the school's undergraduate population are Illinois residents. And about 1 percent are residents of other states.

Data shows 96 percent of full-time undergraduates who started school in 2015-16 received student financial aid in some form. In all, 158 students received grants or scholarships totaling $1.4 million and 155 students took out student loans totaling more than $1.4 million.

Including all undergraduates (4,857), 2,239 students used grants or scholarships totaling $19.4 million, and 1,997 students took out $17.3 million in federal student loans.
