City of Wilmington issued the following announcement on Aug. 7.
Included with your August water bill is a very important survey! The City of Wilmington is requesting your assistance in determining the future of the South Island dam and the Millrace dam. Alternative 1 is the complete removal of the South Island dam, the remnants of the original failed Millrace dam and the remnants of the failed temporary dam. Alternative 2 is the construction of a rock ramp on the downstream side of the South Island dam and construction of a new dam in the Millrace. Alternative 3 is the construction of a rock ramp on the downstream side of the South Island dam and the construction of a series of rock drop structures in the millrace that would be conducive to canoe/kayak passage. The three alternatives listed below are compared based on costs, public safety benefits, environmental benefits, recreational benefits and time frame for implementation.
Please select your preferred preference and return the completed survey to City Hall either with your utility bill payment, by mail or drop off no later than October 21, 2020.
