ILLINOIS STATE HOUSE DISTRICT 37: McDermed Renews Call for Madigan to Resign with Resolution

Illinois State House District 37 issued the following announcement on July 31.

State Representative Margo McDermed (R-Mokena) is once again calling for Speaker Michael Madigan’s resignation with a new resolution.

The U.S. Attorney’s office recently came to an agreement whereby Illinois utility giant, Commonwealth Edison, admitted they engaged in a scheme to benefit the company and ‘Public Official A’, identified as Speaker of the Illinois House, Michael Madigan. This is the latest in a series of indiscretions and outright illegal actions at the hands of the Speaker or members of his cohort.

“For decades, power in Springfield, and thus in Illinois, has been vested in one man. Is it any wonder then that this has bred a boy’s club of corruption in our state government?” posited Rep. McDermed.

In December Rep. McDermed and several other House Republicans called for Madigan’s resignation amid ongoing federal investigations into his inner circle and other Democrats. When the ComEd filing came to light Rep McDermed shifted tactics, calling out House Democrats: “A few weeks ago I called on House Democrats to stand up and join House Republicans in saying enough is enough. Regrettably, only a few House Democrats have finally come forward to demand Speaker Madigan’s resignation.”

Instead of seeing the writing on the wall, the Speaker released a defiant statement on July 30th that he has no plans to resign and will continue to lead, and thus control, Illinois Democrats at all levels of government. In response, Rep. McDermed is sponsoring House Resolution 885 to call for a no confidence vote in Speaker Madigan to remove him from his position of power in the Illinois House of Representatives.

“Even as the cracks break in Speaker Madigan’s own caucus, he continues to grip tight to the unprecedented power he wields as Speaker of the House, head of the Democratic Party of Illinois, and holder of the Democrat war chests,” Rep. McDermed continued. “We won’t truly have a government of the people until Speaker Madigan’s reign and the culture of corruption he has created is ended.”
