CITY OF WILMINGTON: United States Government Stimulus Package - Beware Of Scammers Ramping Up Their Attacks

City of Wilmington issued the following announcement on March 27.

The Will County Sheriff's Office is warning citizens of hackers and scammers using another angle to take advantage of the hype and fear surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic.

What to know about these scams related to stimulus package and receiving your relief funds:

*United States government will never send an email or text asking for your personal information to get federal aid. Do not respond or answer a text message if you receive any.

*Outside sources with promises to help you qualify for your relief money or receive your funds early and are asking for personal information, a small payment as little as $1.99, bank account information, pay pal accounts, is a scam!

* Remember, Never pay money to Get money!

*Letters in the mail or emails or texts may appear legitimate with deceptive names or images such as a presidential seal or a photo of the president, words like 'private and confidential', should cause you to pause - they are being used in order for you to believe they are legitimate and official. They are not! They are being sent in order to steal your identity or drain your bank account.

*Any emails or texts that provide links regarding the stimulus package financial support, do not click on, as malicious software or spyware can be downloaded onto your device.

Initial United States government reports indicate that funds will likely be directly deposited into your bank account or a check will be mailed to your home. Additional details are being worked out with individual situations and how money will be distributed so please educate yourself and stay informed through a legitimate news source.
