Illinois state Rep. Margo McDermed (R-Mokena) is celebrating the season of giving by again hosting a diaper drive, an annual event she started in 2016.
From Nov. 18 to Dec. 18, diapers and other items can be dropped off at McDermed’s state office in Frankfort. Deliveries, which can also come directly from companies like Amazon, will benefit Journey, a local non-profit organization that helps struggling young moms and families.
“In this season of giving, I’m asking our community to share in their good fortune and help out families that are struggling and the children that are our most vulnerable,” McDermed said in a press release. “We’re collecting diapers, baby wipes and diaper rash cream.”
With more than 5 million children under the age of three known to be living in poverty, the National Diaper Bank Network reports that monthly diaper costs can run as much as $80. Despite this, there are no federal or state government assistance programs such as food stamps that cover diaper purchases.
McDermed said it warms her heart to think of all the good the program has meant for struggling mothers.
“I’ve been blown away by the generosity of my constituents over the last few years, but it’s not surprising considering the charitable communities and folks we have in my district,” she added. “I appreciate their kindness and I know Journey has appreciated it.”
Now in her fourth year in Springfield representing the 37th District, McDermed announced earlier this year that she will not be seeking reelection in 2020.
“If I were to win reelection next year, I would turn 70 years old shortly after being sworn in,” McDermed said in a press release announcing her decision. “After 30 years as a corporate lawyer, followed by 14 years as an elected official, it’s time to retire again.”
McDermed’s 37th District includes parts of Frankfort, Frankfort Square, Homer Glen, Ingalls Park, Mokena, New Lenox, Orland Park and Tinley Park.
