Illinois State House District 29 recently issued the following announcement.
State Rep. Thaddeus Jones, D-Calumet City,is calling for a gun violence emergency summit with local leaders, law enforcement officials and educators to continue advancing efforts to crack down on violence claiming innocent lives.
"Too many lives are being lost to gun violence, and I will not wait to take action after the next massacre occurs," Jones said. "Illinois must pass the Fix the FOID Act and put stronger policies in place that prevent assailants from obtaining guns."
Jones will convene the emergency summit with state Rep. Will Davis, state Sen. Napoleon Harris on Tuesday, October 1, 2019 from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Thornridge High School in Dolton. Local mayors and Thornton Township School District 205 Superintendent Nathaniel Cunningham will join the summit, as well as invited guests from the governor’s office, Illinois State Police, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office and the FBI. Later that night, there will be a Town Hall meeting with parents at 6pm.
In Springfield, Jones has been an advocate for gun safety reform, and he supported Illinois’ new 72-hour waiting period law and is calling for the immediate passage of Senate Bill 1966, Fix the FOID Act, which is a major reform effort that modernizes Illinois’ FOID system by eliminating loopholes that have allowed known criminals obtain deadly firearms. Jones also sponsored House Bill 2069 to create the South Suburban Trauma Center which will help residents obtain mental health services and contribute to an overall approach to combatting gun crimes.
"Adopting a trauma center here in this region of Illinois would greatly help those access the mental health services they need, and I have consistently been a leader on creating a center each year," Jones said. "Gun safety should be a bipartisan issue, and I would urge all of my colleagues to join me and others in keeping dangerous guns off our streets."
