Joliet Public Schools District 86 Superintendent Theresa Rouse has enjoyed the interactions she has had with students during the past three years working for the district.

“My experience in Joliet has been amazing,” Rouse told Will County Gazette. “My favorite thing about my job is when I am able to interact with students in their classrooms or through music. I have been able to play violin with some of our junior high students at concerts; my first time playing the violin since high school.”

Rouse has worked 29 years in education, including two years teaching in Palestine. Through her career, she has served as a classroom teacher, administrator and an adjunct university faculty member. She began her work as superintendent for Joliet Public Schools District 86 in July 2016.

“My goal as superintendent is to ensure that we are providing an equitable and rigorous foundation for students to succeed and for staff to be supported,” Rouse said. “I am hopeful we are able to impact the community through the work we do every day in the district. As we help students to learn and grow, we impact the community for the better.”

Rouse was born and raised in Marion, Indiana, and she currently resides in Joliet. Rouse holds a bachelor of arts degree in education from Central Bible College in Springfield, Missouri, a master of arts degree in education from Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, and a doctorate in educational leadership from Argosy University in Phoenix, Arizona.

“I always wanted to be a teacher,” Rouse said. “I loved school as a child. I had many teachers and administrators that shaped who I am today. I love working with children and working to provide opportunities for them to help advance their learning.”

Rouse is a member of the Rotary Club of Joliet, National Hook-Up of Black Women, NAACP, Joliet Grade Schools Foundation for Educational Excellence, Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce Education Committee, and the Zonta Club.

In her spare time, Rouse enjoys traveling and spending time with family, friends and her cat Piper.
