CITY OF LOCKPORT: State Street Project Update

Roadrepair

City of Lockport issued the following announcement on May 30.

Road resurfacing work for the State Street construction project is scheduled to begin Friday, May 31 as the project moves toward completion this summer.

Initial patching and asphalt surface removal will begin Friday, while surface installation is scheduled to begin on Friday, June 7 and striping to begin the following Monday, June 10. Additionally, streetlights throughout the project are expected to be in place the second week of June. All work is weather dependent, and dates are subject to change.

The resurfacing work will be completed at night to alleviate traffic impacts from necessary lane closures, though intermittent daytime closures may also occur. During the week of June 3, the northbound State Street left turn lane, the southbound State Street left turn lane and the westbound 9th Street left turn lane will each be closed overnight with traffic flowing from the remaining lanes.

Earlier this spring, sidewalk installation was completed on the north side of 9th Street between Commerce Street and State Street. Structural work is now underway on the south side of 9th Street and will be followed by sidewalk installation.

The streetscape phase of the project has also begun, with brick pavers currently being installed at the intersection of 10th Street & State Street. Additional streetscape work, including landscaping, will continue through the remainder of the project.

The project, which began in early 2018, focuses on alleviating traffic congestion, implementing safety improvements at the intersection of IL Route 171 (State Street) and IL Route 7 (9th Street) and beautifying the downtown area to attract visitors and businesses. Features of the streetscape include new landscaping, including trees and decorative planters; decorative paving; public gathering spaces with communal seating; and increased walkability throughout the corridor.

Additional improvements include the installation of storm sewer lines, underground electrical infrastructure, new sidewalks, curbs and on-street parking as well as new watermains, which replaced infrastructure installed before 1960.
