Community members in Joliet, Illinois, are encouraged to participate in the Joliet Area African American Historic Context Study by attending Community Interview Events. These events aim to gather stories and information about significant places, people, and events related to the region's Black history. The interviews will be held on May 17, June 21, and July 19 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Bicentennial Park in Joliet. Attendees can either walk in or reserve a time slot by emailing blackhistory@joliet.gov.
Julia Alexander, CEO of IncludingYOU, Inc., expressed her enthusiasm for documenting local history. "I grew up in the Hillcrest neighborhood. People in their 30s don’t even know that name anymore," she said. Alexander emphasized the importance of understanding historical changes and wants to hear from community members about various topics during these events.
The information collected will contribute to planning decisions, historic preservation efforts, and educational programs throughout the region. Contributions can also be made via email or by leaving a voicemail at (708) 683-9121.
The study is funded by the City of Joliet with support from Joliet Township, Lockport Township, Will County, and the State of Illinois. Completion is anticipated in early 2026.
