Former state university employee Garey paid in $59K to pension fund, could collect $818K in retirement

Former state university employee Sharon Garey, who retired in March 2019, saved $58,671 toward a pension over 14 years working for state universities, State Universities Retirement System of Illinois records show.

Over 30 years of retirement, Garey would collect as much as $818,106, according to a projection by Local Government Information Services (LGIS), which publishes Will County Gazette.

The projection assumes Garey received $17,196 in the first year of retirement, then 3 percent annual increases thereafter, compounded.

After 4 years of retirement, Garey will have already received $71,941 in retirement benefits, or more than the sum total of the retiree's contributions to the state pension fund.
