A bill that adds medical information to what constitutes identity theft passed unanimously in the House of Representatives Wednesday.
House Bill 1656 was sponsored by Rep. Margo McDermed (R-Frankfort). It received 115 Yes votes and zero No votes. McDermed said the bill amends the criminal code regarding identity theft.
"This bill adds medical information to the list for the purposes of identity theft," she said on the floor. "That includes anything that allows them to access your health care and steal it for themselves."
McDermed said that includes insurance information and diagnoses. The bill defines personal identifying information for purposes of identity theft to include any information regarding an individual's medical history, mental or physical condition, or medical treatment or diagnosis by a health care professional.
It also includes a person's health insurance policy number or subscriber identification number, any unique identifier used by a health insurer to identify a person, or any information in an individual's application and claims history.
