Citing her husband’s falling health, Will County Republican chair Marianne DeMeritt has tendered her resignation.

In an email sent to all GOP committee members during the week of Jan. 19, the former Will County secretary wrote, “Unfortunately, due to my husband’s increasingly debilitating health issues I will not be able to continue to devote the necessary time and energy to lead this organization.”

DeMeritt’s resignation became official Jan. 19, and Will County GOP officials have wished her and her husband, Robert DeMeritt, “the best of health” going forward.

As last November’s general election drew closer, DeMeritt told the Herald-News what worried her most about this political climate is what she called the growing trend of too many unqualified candidates running for office.

“I’m most concerned that we elect qualified candidates,” she said. “That’s something that has been sorely lacking not only in the county, but at the state level and nationally. There are many smart, educated people that run for office, but they have no business in that office.”
