Joliet to elect mayor, 5 council members in consolidated elections

Joliet

Joliet residents will decide who will serve as mayor in the coming months as the next cycle of local elections unfolds.

The current incumbent mayor is Robert O'DeKirk.

Residents also will vote on five council seats. The incumbents in those positions are Larry Hug, Terry Morris, Bettye Gavin, John Gerl and Pat Mudron.

Primary elections for consolidated races begin on Feb. 26. Residents who want to run in the primary must file their nominating petitions by Nov. 26. The local election board determines the number of signatures required to earn a spot on the ballot.

If no candidate earns a majority of the vote in the primary, a runoff between the two highest vote-getters will take place on April 2.

Those running for local offices typically must have lived in the jurisdiction for at least one year and not be in debt to the municipality. In addition, those who have been convicted of a felony are not allowed to run.
