On June 2, 2025, a groundbreaking ceremony took place at the Durkin Park South West Pumping Station in Chicago. The event marked the beginning of a project that will bring a 66-inch pipeline carrying Lake Michigan water to Crest Hill. Attendees included Mayor Soliman, City Engineer Ron Wiedeman, and Finance Director Glenn Gehrke.

The new pipeline will span 60 miles and supply water from Lake Michigan to several communities: Romeoville, Joliet, Shorewood, Channahon, Minooka, and Crest Hill. These areas are part of the Grand Prairie Water Commission.

This collaboration between six communities and Chicago aims to provide a sustainable long-term water source for over 250,000 residents in the region. The project is set for completion by 2030.
