Valley View Community Unit School District 365U students suspended 1,384 times in a single school year

Valley View Community Unit School District 365U reported 1,384 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

The district transferred 10 students to another program instead of suspending or expelling them.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 1,384 students during the year. That equates to 8.3 percent of the 16,661 students enrolled.

Of the 599 in-school suspensions, 449 were given to boys and 150 were given to girls, including 175 elementary or middle schoolers and 424 high schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 589 incidents. There were five incidents of drugs. For 515 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 785 out-of-school suspensions, 576 were given to boys and 209 were given to girls, including 428 elementary or middle schoolers and 357 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 728 incidents. There were 43 incidents of drugs. For 479 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
