The Plainfield East High School Bengals are hoping three's a charm for the upcoming football season.
With a new head coach, new athletic director and new turf on their home field, the Bengals are looking to turn things around after a 2-7 season that landed them in eighth place in the Southwest Prairie Conference.
One positive take from last year is their strong showing against two conference rivals. The Bengals beat Joliet Central, 6-0, and walloped Plainfield Central, 41-20.
Plainfield wants to get better on both sides of the ball. In 2016, the Bengals' offense averaged only 11 points per game and the defense gave up an average of 26 points per game.
Oswego East High School and Plainfield North High School promise to be particularly tough games this year. Last year the Oswego Wolves finished with a 9-2 record and look to have another strong team this year. The Bengals lost 46-9 to the Wolves 46-9 and were crushed by their cross-town rivals, 42-0.
Plainfield East's first game is on Aug. 25 against Joliet Central High School.
