The City of Joliet has announced the selection of its 2025 City Square Christmas Tree, marking the beginning of preparations for the city’s annual holiday celebrations in downtown Joliet.
This year’s tree is a Norway Spruce from 605 Catherine Street. The tree was donated by Darra Glavan, a resident of Joliet. Homer Tree Service will handle the removal and transport of the tree on Friday, November 14. Work will begin at approximately 7:00 a.m., with arrival in City Square expected around 10:00 a.m.
The city received 22 applications from residents interested in donating a tree for this tradition. Nine applications came from Joliet residents, while others were submitted by people from nearby communities. Each application was reviewed and ranked based on factors such as the tree’s background, condition, and ease of access.
Ann Sylvester, Director of Cultural Affairs & Special Events, said, “The City of Joliet is thrilled to showcase this stunning tree, donated by a Joliet resident, as the very first holiday tree to shine in the new City Square. Its lighting will mark the start of the holiday season and will stand as a centerpiece for our community to gather, celebrate, and share in the spirit of the season.”
After installation in City Square, the tree will be decorated ahead of Joliet’s annual Light Up the Holidays Celebration and Parade. This event is organized in partnership with the Joliet City Center Partnership and is scheduled for Friday, November 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Joliet is located about 30 miles southwest of Chicago and serves as Will County's seat. According to data from the 2020 census, it ranks as Illinois’ third largest city with over 150,000 residents. More information about Joliet can be found at https://www.joliet.gov.
