Cook County has introduced a $15 million Homeowner Relief Fund aimed at helping residents who have experienced significant property tax increases in recent years. The program offers eligible households a one-time payment of $1,000, though the number of grants is limited.
The Cook County Bureau of Economic Development is managing the fund. To qualify, homeowners must have seen their property tax bills rise by at least 50% in 2021, 2022, or 2023. This also includes those who received a property tax bill for the first time during these years.
“The Homeowner Relief Fund is designed to provide direct, timely assistance to households who’ve been hardest hit by rising property taxes,” county officials said in a statement.
Applications began in late September and are being processed in two phases. In the first phase, applicants submit basic information and those meeting eligibility criteria enter a lottery for advancement. In the second phase, selected applicants are asked to provide verification documents before entering a final lottery that determines grant recipients.
Income limits apply based on guidelines from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. For example, families of four with incomes up to $119,900 may be eligible. Applicants must also use the home as their primary residence.
Local leaders are urging Park Forest residents to consider applying while funds last. “We know property tax increases have placed a heavy burden on many homeowners in our community,” said Village Manager Jon Kindseth. “This program is an important opportunity for families here in Park Forest to get some relief.”
County officials estimate about 14,000 households will benefit from this initiative across Cook County.
