Residents of Park Forest and nearby communities will have a chance to dispose of sensitive documents and unused prescription drugs at an upcoming event on Saturday, October 4. The Fall Shred/Drug Take-Back Event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon in the parking lot at Forest Boulevard and Lakewood Boulevard, across from the Park Forest Police Station.

The event is free and open to all, with no residency requirement. It is organized by the Village of Park Forest in partnership with Homewood Disposal Service and the Park Forest Police Department. On-site shredding will be provided for personal paper documents, helping individuals protect themselves from identity theft.

“Events like this are important because they provide a safe, secure way to dispose of sensitive documents and medications,” said Carrie Malfeo, the Village’s sustainability coordinator. “Not only does it help protect individuals from identity theft, but it also keeps harmful materials out of our landfills and waterways.”

Participants are asked to limit their paper drop-offs to two boxes or bags per vehicle. Only paper documents will be accepted; garbage, three-ring binders, binder clips, and plastic sleeves will not be allowed.

Prescription drug collection will accept pills and capsules only—liquids and sharps are excluded.

“We understand these issues extend beyond Park Forest,” Malfeo said. “By opening this up to our neighbors, we’re making it easier for more households to dispose of these items in a safe and responsible way.”

Staff and volunteers will collect items directly from participants’ vehicles so drivers can remain inside their cars during drop-off.
